Arsene Wenger has revealed that he expects Alexis Sanchez to remain at the Emirates beyond the January transfer window.
The Chilean made no secret of his desire to leave the Emirates during last summer’s transfer window with Manchester City understood to have made him a key target.
With the versatile forward into the last year of his contract at the Emirates, it was initially thought that City would patiently wait to sign him on a free at the end of the season, it is however also understood that the Citizens could very well make a January offer for the Arsenal star man to avoid losing him to a foreign club who have the advantage of negotiating a pre-contract with Sanchez from January.
Ahead of the teams’ Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium, Wenger denied claims Sanchez may be lacking the desire to perform and expressed his belief the forward would stay with the club till the end of the season.
“You say everybody thinks City will come in for Alexis – I am part of everybody and I don’t think he will go,” Wenger said reports Four Four Two
“Do City need him? They have to decide that. But we need him here
“I expect him to be motivated against City but that is always the case. One thing you cannot fault in Alexis Sanchez is his motivation. When he plays for Chile, he plays with passion that is in South America.
“It’s the same for [previous club] Barcelona and Arsenal. He is happy when he is on the pitch and that is all he wants.
Contrary to initially believed, the gaffer also revealed that Sanchez was at no point close to joining City despite a fee being agreed on deadline day.
“Was he close to joining City? No. But at the end of the day, close or not does not matter. It does not have any influence. What is important is that, when you are somewhere and you have the opportunity to give your best, that is what you must do.”
When asked if he thought Sanchez would sign a fresh deal to extend his stay at Arsenal, Wenger cheekily replied thus: “Before Sunday, certainly not.”
