Arsene Wenger has reacted to reports linking Mesut Ozil with a move to Manchester United.
According to reports, the German has privately told his teammates that he will be joining Man Utd when his contract expires but Wenger has urged him to play with commitment, amid speculations on his future.
It is believed that Arsenal are ready to sell him in January to avoid losing him for nothing in the summer but Wenger wants him to remain focused till the last day.
Ozil is demanding a £350,000 per week salary to sign a new contract at Arsenal but the club is only willing to pay him up to £275,000 per week. With the player not ready to reduce his demands, Arsenal’s interest in keeping him has now cooled.
The German is believed to be keen on a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United but Wenger insists nothing will change in his decision making regardless of the player’s decision.
“We have to deal with all kinds of speculation when the players are at the end of their contracts,” Wenger told the club website.
“On the other hand, to be professional is to give 100 per cent as long as you are somewhere.
“For the rest, we came out many times and said that’s the situation. It [the media] can come out tomorrow and say that he extends his contract here.
“It will be exactly the same, it will not change anything. When you play the next game, commit 100 per cent.”
Ozil hasn’t been at his best this season and some people have been quick to say his form is down to the uncertainty surrounding his future. However, I think his poor form is down to fitness and I am sure we’ll see the best of him when he is fully fit.
