Arsenal star Mesut Ozil is set to hold negotiations with Major League Soccer side D.C. United through an intermediary ahead of a possible move to the United States.

The 30-year-old playmaker has fallen out of favour at the Gunners ever since he signed a new long-term deal and has been placed up for sale by Arsenal this summer, although displays during pre-season have left some supporters believing that Mesut is deserving of another chance next campaign.

World Cup winner Mesut might not be given an opportunity, however, as The Washington Post’s Steven Goff states that the former Germany international will send an intermediary across the Atlantic Ocean to hold discussions with D.C. United in the coming days.

The MLS club are on the hunt for a new marquee signing following Wayne Rooney’s transfer to Derby County, and it’s understood that Mesut is just one name that DC United are considering this summer.

Originally sitting along with free agent Mario Balotelli as a target for January, Steven now claims that the former Real Madrid player will hold talks with D.C. United next week.

As talks will not be taking place until after the EPL transfer window closes, Arsenal would be forced to land a replacement as soon as possible, and uncertainty over Mesut’s future could be why the club were suddenly connected with a serious move for Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho on Tuesday.

The club have already secured Spain international Dani Ceballos on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, and the star could prove to be the perfect stop-gap for coach Unai Emery if Özil does decide to depart this summer.
