A report from the Express claims Arsenal are on the brink of signing Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria this week.
The 22-year-old, who is in the Uruguay squad for this summer’s World Cup, has also been linked with a move to Everton as well as Serie A duo Juventus and Napoli in the past and is said to have a $29.21m (£21m) release clause in his contract at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
The Gunners are reportedly closing in on a deal for the Uruguay international, with a deal believed to have been agreed with Sampdoria.
It is reported that they will travel to the Uruguay training camp in Nizhny Novgorod where the five-year contract will be signed and he will undergo medicals to finalise the deal.
Torreira graduated from the Pescara academy, which has produced the likes of Ciro Immobile, Marco Verratti and Lorenzo Insigne in recent years.
Diminutive and combative, he arrived in Italy as a striker in the Carlos Tevez mould, but was transformed into a defensive midfielder by former manager Massimo Oddo.
His arrival means he will become Arsenal’s second signing after Stephan Lichtsteiner joined the Gunners on a free transfer.
