Granit Xhaka will be assessed ahead of the trip to Newcastle United after missing the 2-2 draw with CSKA Moscow due to illness.

If the Swiss midfielder is fit to return, he could join Mohamed Elneny at the base of midfield in the usual 4-2-3-1 system.

But if Xhaka remains out, Jack Wilshere is likely to start after only playing 69 minutes in Russia.

Aaron Ramsey provides another option, though is likely to be rested having picked up a gashed shin in Thursday’s tie.

Laurent Koscielny is another likely to be omitted from the starting XI on Tyneside.

But Alex Iwobi only played 13 minutes as a substitute in Moscow, so he appears a likely starter in the attacking midfield spots, perhaps alongside Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will start given he is ineligible to play in Europe, most likely in the lone striker role.

Calum Chambers is set to start ahead of Koscielny in central defence, while if Arsene Wenger chooses to rest Nacho Monreal once more, Sead Kolasinac should come in at left-back.

Rob Holding provides further defensive cover.

David Ospina, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Santi Cazorla remain sidelined.
