Shkodran Mustafi reportedly keen to fight for his place at Emirates Stadium despite the club being keen to get rid of him. Gunners coach Unai Emery wants to let go of Germany international, who earns £120,000 a week, but the same source claims that the footballer has other ideas.
Arsenal are therefore struggling to offload Shkodran who joined the London club from Valencia in 2016 for a transfer fee over £35m. Gunners are currently in the USA for their first pre-season friendly against Colorado Rapids.
The 27-year-old defender has travelled with the team to the US, which is evidence that he is keen to fight for his place in the line-up. German centre-back did manage to score three goals last campaign, but his performances at the back were poor. This is perhaps why he hasn’t been snapped him up.
London club need to strengthen their squad improve their back-line if they are to play Champions League football in the 2020/21 campaign. However, Arsenal have a very low transfer budget, which is £40m. Raising funds is another reason why the Spanish manager wants to sell Mustafi.
Things have gotten even worse for the London club as they have confirmed on their website that Laurent Koscielny decided not to travel to the United States with the rest of the Gunners. This is enough to suggest that France international wants to leave Arsenal.
Provided Laurent does leave the London club, the only recognisable defenders left with the Gunners are Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi. The other defenders Arsenal have are youngsters Rob Holding, Calum Chambers and Dinos Mavropanos.
