Arsenal star Mesut Ozil’s representatives are reportedly on their way to Washington this week, to discuss a transfer that could see the German midfielder replace Wayne Rooney at the MLS club in January.

Ozil is not believed to have a place in the Spanish manager Unai Emery’s long-term plans in spite of putting pen to paper on a fresh five-year deal shortly before Unai’s arrival last summer, with his work attitude and ethic having been heavily reported to have caused problems between player and boss.

His days at the Emirates Stadium seem to be numbered and, after a transfer to Fenerbahce did not come off before the closure of the English transfer market on Thursday, interest has come from the United States, with MLS side DC United touted as a possible destination.

The Washington-based club are on the observation post for a marquee star to replace captain Wayne Rooney, whose return to his homeland with Derby County has been confirmed for January.

The Express claim that Mesut is seen as an option to fill his boots, with agents of the player set to fly out to the US this week to discuss a possible move.

The main sticking point, however, is the 30-year-old playmaker’s exorbitant wages. Rooney earned a base salary of £56,000-a-week in DC United, while the league’s highest earner – Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic – rakes in £115,000.

Ozil, meantime, is the second-highest-paid player in the EPL on £350,000 per week, meaning that a dramatic wage cut would be needed for him to make the move across the ocean.
