Reports claim Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Kostas Manolas for £30.5million, according to the Sun.
Last month, Tutto Mercato Web reported that the Red Devils have expressed a clear interest in signing the experienced center half, who has a release clause of £32.4million in his contract.
Former boss Jose Mourinho was eager to land a centre-back but Ed Woodward was reluctant to spend on Toby Alderweireld, Diego Godin or Harry Maguire.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the interim boss, is unlikely to have much sway over the club’s transfer policy but the Spanish press suggest Manolas could be on his way in.
Manolas hinted at a big move last season, naming United directly as a club he would be keen on.
‘It’s only natural you want to play for the biggest clubs, like Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich,’ he said.
It is understood United are thought to be holding funds back until their long-term managerial situation is finalised.
And Solskjaer admitted last week that he is expecting a quiet month on the transfer front.
“I’m happy with squad I’ve got,” he said.
“I don’t expect anyone to come in but obviously if the club have targeted and identified a few and I think they might fit here, I’ll give my thumbs up. But it’s not just my decision.
