Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has withdrawn from Serbia’s squad for their Uefa Nations League fixtures in Montenegro and Romania due to a back injury, according to Eurosport.
Matic has made eight appearances for United this season and played 90 minutes in the 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday.
‘Nemanja Matic did not come to Belgrade for the camp because he has a problem with his back,’ said Serbia boss Mladen Krstajic.
‘The MRI scan showed that he could not play, Kolarov came in, joined up with his team-mates but was injured, and Nenad Krsticic will not be able to to play.’
Despite Matic’s absence on the pitch, the 30-year-old is expected to watch his national team in action as Jose Mourinho is also set to be in attendance for Serbia’s clash with Montenegro.
‘Matic will most likely come to Podgorica to see us because his boss is coming,’ said Krstajic.
Serbia, meanwhile, must do without two of their most experienced players, with captain Aleksandar Kolarov also ruled out because of injury.
Goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic said on the Football Association of Serbia’s website: “Sure we’ll miss them. They are our two captains and the best players, but in this team we have a lot of quality players who are ready to replace them in their absence.
“And whoever runs on the field in Podgorica, I am sure that on the individual and collective plan, we will do our best to achieve good results.”
He could also be sidelined for United’s crunch Stamford Bridge clash when they return to action after the international break.
