Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta revealed that January signing Cedric Soares is disappointed because he has yet to make an impression in his new team due to his knee injury.

Cedric joined the Gunners last month on loan from Southampton but he is still trying to regain fitness and thus hasn’t yet trained with the rest of the squad.

Arteta, though, is hopeful that the right-back will be back in full training in the next two weeks but doesn’t know exactly when he will play his first match for his new team.

The Arsenal boss said: “He is very disappointed because when you join a new club you want to make an impression straight away.

“He had an issue in his knee, it is not completely healed yet and he hasn’t been training with us so I expect him to be back in the next couple of weeks but I can’t give you a date.”

Cedric said that his transfer to Arsenal is “a dream come true” and is keen on proving himself to his new manager and the fans.

Therefore, his inability to reach full fitness is understandably raising his frustration levels as he is very passionate about the opportunity that has been presented in front of him.

Cedric previously said: “It feels amazing. It’s a dream come true being here, and being able to play for Arsenal is unreal.

“For me, Arsenal is a top team. They are a very, very good club, with fantastic fans as well. They are known to be so well supported and for me, it’s a pleasure to be here.

“Like I said, it’s a dream come true because I always thought about coming here and imagined it, and seeing it happen is really amazing.”

Arsenal also signed Pablo Mari on loan from Flamengo during the January transfer window in their bid to fix their fragile defence.

However, Mari hasn’t played a competitive match since December and is unlikely to feature on Sunday when the Gunners take on Newcastle at the Emirates (4.30pm).

But Arteta expects the centre-back to join the first team in the next week before the north Londoners’ Europa League clash with Olympiacos at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium on February 20 (8pm).

The Arsenal manager added: “Pablo has not competed since the end of December I think, he had a little issue, but he has been training with us the last week or so, in and out a little bit, but he has been looking good.

“I think this game will come a little bit too early for him but I expect him to start joining the squad in the next week or so.”
