Arsenal are on the verge of signing 17-year-old Ituano forward Gabriel Martinelli, according to reports in the English media.
The Daily Mail write that Martinelli has been lined up as the club’s first summer signing of Unai Emery’s continued squad rebuild. They say the wide man is ‘on the verge of committing himself’ to Arsenal.
The report further claims Ex Gunners midfielder Edu is being lined up to become the club’s new technical director following failed moves for Monchi and Marc Overmars in recent months.
The 40-year-old, who was a key part of Arsenal’s 2003-04 Invincibles side, is currently the general coordinator for Brazil’s national teams.
Edu would not join Arsenal until after Brazil’s Copa America campaign finishes in the summer, but it’s understood that the Gunners are prepared to wait.
Head coach Unai Emery is expected to address a number of positions within his squad – most notably in defence – but this season has shown just how much a natural wide-man is needed.
Gabriel Martinelli could be the next product of Brazilian football, following in the footsteps of Gabriel Jesus, Neymar and Richarlison who have all made the switch to Europe at a relatively young age.
Described as a quick and skilful player who is comfortable playing as a second striker or as a winger with an eye for goal, Gabriel Martinelli could be the type of player many Arsenal fans have been crying out for in recent years.
