Arsenal are on the brink of an agreement for Le Havre rising star Pape Gueye. The Gunners look set to beat a string of clubs to his signature at the end of the season.

Emirates Stadium bosses previously dipped into Ligue 2 to lure Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient.

The 21-year-old midfielder has proved a success so Arsenal will attempt to repeat the trick this summer.

According to Jeunes Footeux, a €6million (£5m) is likely to be agreed with Le Havre for Gueye.

AC Milan, Fiorentina, Udinese and Sevilla have also been tracking the defensive midfielder’s progress but look set to lose to Arsenal.

If a deal goes through then Gueye will become the first permanent signing of the Mikel Arteta era.

Arsenal’s only signings in the January transfer window were the loan arrivals of Pablo Mari from Flamengo and Cedric Soares from Southampton.

Gueye has earned international honours at youth level for France since making his Le Havre debut in 2017.

He has made 37 appearances in total for his club, while earning six caps for his country’s Under-19s.

A number of brilliant players have come through Le Havre’s ranks over the years including Benjamin Mendy and Riyad Mahrez. Paul Pogba also spent time in the club’s academy before first moving to Manchester United in 2009.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes the club need to invest in at least two new players in the summer to improve the spine of the team.

“They need a centre half and a world-class holding midfielder,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I think Arsenal need to play with a back three. They’re not good enough as defenders to play as a four.”
