It has been a rather mixed campaign thus far for Joe Willock.
The Arsenal academy product featured prominently whilst Unai Emery was in charge of the Gunners, making 17 appearances across all competitions under the Spaniard.
But following Mikel Arteta’s arrival as the club’s new head coach, Willock has seen his game-time greatly diminish, playing just 159 minutes worth of football.
The 20-year-old was given the chance to shine against Olympiacos however in the Europa League on Thursday night, but sadly for him, failed to take it with both hands.
As per Sofascore, he won just four of his 12 total duels, had just 49 touches, and lost possession 17 times (only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave the ball away more for Arsenal with 19).
After seeing his performance, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the prospect.
A couple of fans took aim at his work in possession of the ball in particular, with one supporter saying he is the “greediest player I’ve ever seen”.
Some fans of the north London side meanwhile brought former Gunner, Alex Iwobi, into the conversation, claiming that Willock is simply destined to be like the Nigerian.
In what was otherwise an impressive result for the Gunners, Willock will certainly go down as one of the few negatives of the night.
The England U21 international struggled to really connect with the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with one instance seeing him completely divert a pass away from finding the latter.
Arteta was not left with any major headache going forward about Willock somehow forcing his way into his first-team plans anytime soon.
