Arsene Wenger has all but confirmed that he will be loosening the purse strings this January, even though he also admits the Gunners are currently not close to signing anyone yet, according to the Daily Cannon.
Wenger admitted that Arsenal will be active in the January transfer window but he didn’t say who and what position they will add “I cannot give you news on any transfer because we are not close to signing anybody”
“We signed a Greek boy (Mavropanos) who looks quite good in training but apart from that, we have not done anything Will we be out there to do something? Yes, we will. Yes (there could be developments this week), because we are in the second week of January and, after that, it passes quickly.”
Wenger who normally is not a fan of January transfer windows and has even called for scrapping it entirely on occasions, with his biggest January signing coming in form of Andrei Arshavin in 2009 and more recently Mohamed Elneny.
If we go with history we would expect that Wenger will just bluff and sign no big player, but given the current precarious situation at the club he might be forced to do another Arshavin type deal. Hopefully though whoever comes in this time will perform at the top level longer than the Russian did for Arsenal.
