Real Madrid are unlikely to follow through with their bid to sign Gabriel Martinelli from Arsenal this summer, reports say. The striker has been the surprise package at Arsenal this season and has gone from strength to strength in his debut campaign for the Gunners, scoring ten goals in all competitions.

Martinelli’s performances have caught the eye of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Daily Star claim Zinedine Zidane is a massive fan of the 18-year-old. Real were plotting a summer transfer move for Martinelli, but those plans are set to be put on hold during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Premier League has extended the season indefinitely and there are rumours that the summer transfer window might have to be postponed.   Martinelli penned a long-term deal with Arsenal when he signed from Ituano last July and is thought to be under contract at the club until 2024.

The Brazilian has given no indication he wants to leave Arsenal and was full of praise for Mikel Arteta, having been brought to the Emirates by former boss Unai Emery.

‘He’s been brilliant,’ Martinelli added. ‘He pays a lot of attention to moves and keeps pushing me to improve my game, not only in attack but defence, too.

‘The boss is very wise tactically and incredibly helpful. ‘He’s not an angry guy at all, but likes showing you exactly what to do on the pitch: “If the ball goes that way, don’t stay here, go there and turn your body that specific way”. He has a keen eye for detail.’
