According to a report via Sky Sports, Arsenal are in advance talks in signing Sampdoria and Uruguay international star Lucas Torreira.
The report claims Arsenal have made an offer of £26.5m (€30m) in installments for the 22-year-old, rather than agreeing to pay his £22m (€25m) release clause in one lump sum.
Personal terms still need to be sorted, although it seems the Gunners are closing in on his signing.
Torreira has emerged as a preferred option for new Gunners boss Unai Emery, who wants a defensive midfielder brought in before next season.
The Uruguay international joined Sampdoria in the summer of 2015 from fellow Italian side Pescara and has gone on to make 74 appearances.
He played 38 times and scored four times as Sampdoria finished 10th in Serie A.
Arsenal have already signed Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free and have agreed a deal worth around £16m with Borussia Dortmund for Sokratis Papastathopoulos which is expected to be confirmed next month.
Napoli are also interested in his signature but the Daily Star claims Arsenal have already agreed a deal in signing the 22-year-old.
