Arsenal Postpone Ozil and Sanchez Contract Negotiations Until Summer

Arsene Wenger has revealed that a decision has been taken with mutual consent to hold off contract negotiations with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez until the summer. Both players out of contract in the summer of 2018. However, advanced negotiations are yet to take place. This has put the future of both players under a cloud of doubt. Ozil has previously stated that his future at Arsenal would depend on the presence of Wenger at the club. Sanchez, meanwhile, has been silent on the issue amidst increasing rumours linking him with a move to China.

There is plenty of uncertainty surrounding the club. A run of four defeats in the last five league matches has seen place Arsenal at 3/1 to finish in the Premier league top four.

Wenger’s future at the club has become increasingly difficult to predict in recent weeks. A string of poor results in the last couple of months has led to the club not just dropping out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage, but top four now looks a major doubt following the 3-1 loss against West Brom during the weekend. A lot of fans have been calling for Wenger to leave the club. In the past, the manager has retained the faith of the board and fans even during a difficult time. It is clearly not the case this time around.

Even Wenger’s contract is up for renewal in the summer. After the loss against West Brom, the manager revealed that he has made a decision on his future and that supporters will know about the same soon.

The decision to postpone the contract talks of key players like Ozil and Sanchez is something that raises further concern about the club and the direction taken by Arsenal. Both players will be able to leave for a free in the summer of 2018. Wenger has previously said that the club would rather keep the players until the summer rather than sell them for a lower fee in the upcoming summer.

It would not be surprising to see fans’ upheaval increase even further following this news.
