Arsenal legend Lee Dixon says Jack Wilshere’s biggest problem is nobody knows what his best position is.
Wilshere was left out of the England squad for their friendlies against Germany and Brazil.
Despite several midfielders dropping out through injury, the Arsenal man was not called up as a replacement.
England boss Gareth Southgate’s reasoning was because Wilshere had not played enough Premier League football this season, being limited to two substitute appearances.
Dixon says that is not helped by Southgate and club manager Arsene Wenger disagreeing where his best position is.
Wenger has played Wilshere as a No 10 for Arsenal this season but Southgate sees him in a deeper role.
“It’s not ideal for Gareth Southgate because I’m sure he wanted to try a few things out and he’s had a lot of pull-outs,” Dixon said on ITV ahead of the Germany clash.
“The difficult thing now is can he play the system he wanted to play?
“Players that are coming in, he’s already talked about players playing out of position at their clubs and fitting into this team, Jack Wilshere was one of those.
“It’s a difficult time for him to manage that situation.
“Obviously talking to the press, they are picking holes out of it, saying ‘you can’t have it for one player and then you’re talking about Wilshere’.
“The difficulty with Jack Wilshere is nobody seems to know what his best position is.
“Everyone’s got a debate on that.”
