Robert Pires has urged his former club Arsenal to attempt to sign Anthony Martial from Manchester United.

France international Martial joined the Red Devils in 2015, becoming the most expensive teenager in history when he left Monaco for a fee of over £50million.

The 22-year-old has struggled to live up to his price-tag, however, failing to nail down a place in United’s team under Jose Mourinho.

Martial has started less than half of Manchester United’s Premier League fixtures this season and he is being strongly linked with a summer move.

Barcelona, Chelsea and Arsenal have all expressed interest in signing the young forward and Pires hopes the Gunners can strike a deal.

‘I’m a big fan of Anthony Martial,’ Pires, who won two Premier League titles under Arsene Wenger, told bwin.

‘He’s very fast, he has excellent dribbling skills and he has the potential to score a lot of goals, but I think he has to play more football.

‘I don’t know why he isn’t playing more for Manchester United and [Jose] Mourinho needs to show more confidence in him. I would welcome him at Arsenal!’

Pires has also backed Arsenal to sign Borussia Dortmund and Greece star Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who was linked with Chelsea and United earlier in the year.

Sven Mislintat, Arsenal’s head of recruitment who previously worked at Dortmund, has reportedly identified Papastathopoulos as a priority signing.

‘I think improving the defence must be a priority for the new manager and I think he would be a very good signing,’ Pires added.

‘He’s been a consistent performer for Borussia Dortmund and I would like to see him lead the defensive line for Arsenal.’
