Arsenal legend Alan Smith claims it would be no surprise if manager Unai Emery decides to ditch Shkodran Mustafi and sign a new center-back in the near future, according to the Evening Standard.
The Gunners are having an impressive season so far and are currently on a 21-game unbeaten run in all competitions which has seen them climb to fifth position on the table.
After losing their first two league games of the season, they went on to win their next seven games and draw their last three, while it has been an impressive run, they have worryingly conceded 20 goals in the 16 games and have only kept 3 clean sheets.
Smith believes that while some fringe players like Rob Holding are impressing this season, there are still some weak links in the backline and he singled out Mustafi for criticism.
“I like the look of Holding,” he wrote.
“He has had a run in the side, which has been vital for his development and confidence.
“It can’t be easy playing alongside Shkodran Mustafi in central defence, because the German is very erratic, and it would be no surprise if Arsenal made it their priority to sign a centre-back sooner rather than later.”
Arsenal are still quite thin at the back, with club captain Laurent Koscielny set to return to action soon as he steps up recovery after a long injury layoff.
