Arsene Wenger’s plans of strengthening his rearguard with the addition of Kostas Manolas have been dealt a severe blow with reports indicating the Italian giants AS Roma are set to tie the centre back down on a new long term deal.

News about a potential contract extension for the 26-year-old center back would surely be devastating for Wenger.

The Greek international is a long term , prior to making his move from Olympiakos to Roma in the summer of 2014 till date, the defender continues to be linked with a move to the Emirates.

Manolas who was understood to be keen on a move from away Italy now surprisingly looks set for an extended stay, the classy defender came close to ending his three-year stay in Italy in June to join Zenit but the deal broke down at the last minute reportedly due to a wage dispute between Euros and Rubles.

The move failed to materialize obviously but London rivals Chelsea are believed to have joined Arsenal in monitoring the player’s situation at the Stadio Olympico with the view of signing him for a bargain fee next summer when he would have just a year left to run on his contract.

Recent reports have however indicated Roma are preparing a new deal for Manolas to ward off potential interest from the London duo.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport via Squakwa , Monchi, the club’s sporting director, will head the talks with the Naxos-born footballer in a bid to deter his suitors as they are determined to keep hold of the defender.

The Roma man’s contract expires in the summer of 2019 and the Italian outfit who have finished runners-up in three of the last four Serie A campaigns are desperate to tie him down to a new deal to ward off any fresh bids.

Arsene Wenger’s interest in the towering defender comes with no surprise. The Gunners who currently play with 3 central defenders at the back could do with the addition of another proven international central defender.

Of the three first choice defenders at the Emirates, Nacho Monreal and Lorient Koscienly are on the wrong side of thirty while Shkodran Mustafi faces an uncertain future having been heavily linked with a move away last window.

Manolas has again continued in very impressive fashion for Roma this season, Across his five Serie A appearances, to date, he’s won 100% of his attempted take-ons whilst also registering an 84% pass accuracy.
