Arsenal have made signing a central midfielder and a central defender their priority this summer as the uncertainty over Jack Wilshere’s future at the club increases, according to the Telegraph.
Wilshere currently has a deal that runs out in the summer and has refused to accept the terms Arsenal are offering him to renew, he has been plagued with injuries for almost his entire career at Arsenal and regained fitness this season, but Arsenal are still cautious as can be seen in their £90k a week contract offer with very lucrative add ons.
Arsenal effectively dealt with their attacking challenges in January, however Aaron Ramsey is also yet to extend his contract and Santi Cazorla’s career is in doubt at the moment, leaving the core of the midfield potentially hanging on the balance. Sven Mislintat and his scouting team will now turn their attention to the midfield and 22-year-old Max Meyer from Schalke is a target, as his contract expires in the summer.
Should Jack Wilshere leave in the summer to any of the clubs currently reported to be trailing him, bringing in Max Meyer on a free would represent a shrewd and excellent piece of business, as he would represent a younger and long term replacement for the 26-year-old England international.
Arsenal seem to be turning the corner in what has been a terrible campaign with the Europa league their only remaining source of redemption this season, Arsene Wenger’s job is on the balance and key decisions from now till the end of the season will determine if he will have a 23rd year in charge at Arsenal.
