Arsenal have turned their attention to Jean-Philippe Gbamin as an alternative to Samuel Umtiti, according to Sport Witness
The Mainz centre-back would set the Gunners back around £30million, but is being courted by several European clubs ahead of the summer transfer window opening.
Gbamin, who is a five-time Ivory Coast international, has played in both midfield and defence for Mainz during the 2018-19 campaign.
Mainz are in the bottom half of the Bundesliga this season, but 23-year-old Gbamin has seemingly caught the eye. The Ivory Coast international joined the German club from Lens in 2016 and remains under contract until 2023 after only signing a new long-term deal last summer.
Nacho Monreal and Shkodran Mustafi are two players who could leave – should Arsenal find buyers for the duo – but both would need replacing.
A left-back is high up on Unai Emery’s wishlist, as is a wide player and a box-to-box midfielder to replace the outgoing Aaron Ramsey.
And Gbamin could be the perfect player to fill the void at centre-back.
