Barcelona could make a move for Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen if Samuel Umtiti requires surgery on an ongoing knee problem, according to Sport.
Blues boss Maurizio Sarri has found it difficult to placate Christensen’s desire for first-tezam football this season, having not used him once in the Premier League.
And the Denmark international has been linked with Serie A side Milan, who are keen to secure a new defender with Alessio Romagnoli the latest absentee in the club’s injury crisis.
However, Christensen will not be on the market and Sarri has instructed the 22-year-old to remain patient, with Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz being Chelsea’s current first-choice centre-backs.
Chelsea are more open to allowing Gary Cahill to leave with only seven months remaining on his current contract.
Cahill has enjoyed a glorious seven-year spell at the club, winning every major honour, but the 32-year-old has also expressed his frustration at a lack of regular minutes this term.
And Cahill’s possible departure would allow Christensen, who has played every minute in the Europa League and Carabao Cup for Chelsea, more space to develop.
After playing 40 games under Antonio Conte last season, Christensen has faced repeated questions about his future at Stamford Bridge.
Christensen is said to be desperate for game time and Barcelona could be set to offer him a lifeline, with Ernesto Valverde’s side said to have sounded out Chelsea regarding a potential deal already.
