Arsenal made a £25m bid for Johnny Evans on transfer deadline day, according to BBC journalist Simone Stone, according to reports.

Wenger is a big admirer of Evans and it is well documented that he tried to sign the defender last summer but West Brom weren’t interested in losing him.

Manchester City were also interested in signing the defender and his club subsequently placed a £30m price tag on him.

Arsenal were also interested in signing Evans and made a move to sign on deadline day.

However, the Baggies turned down the bid because they were not interested in losing the 29 year old so late in the transfer window.

Stone told BBC Sport, as quoted by Sport Review: “West Brom turned down offers of around £25m from both Leicester and Arsenal on Thursday”.

There were a lot of talks about Shkodran Mustafi leaving the club to Inter Milan and I am sure Arsenal were trying to sign Evans as a replacement before sanctioning the sale.

However, Inter couldn’t agree a fee for Mustafi and there was no need to aggressively pursue a move for Evans.

Arsenal ended up making two new signings in Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac for a total of £52m, which is a far cry from what our rivals spent to strengthen their squad.
