Arsenal’s defensive injury crisis worsened as Shkodran Mustafi limped off in the second half of their game against Huddersfield at the Emirates on Saturday.

The German centre-back pulled up with a hamstring problem just after the hour mark and immediately signalled to the bench to be replaced by Nacho Monreal.

Unai Emery is about to find himself short of defensive options after seeing two experienced stars Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi pick up yellow cards against Huddersfield which leave them facing a ban.

Both men headed into a Premier League clash with Huddersfield sat on four cautions for the season.

Emery will now be sweating over the fitness of Mustafi ahead of a hectic festive period after losing first choice centre-back Rob Holding to a long-term knee injury on Wednesday.

Arsenal have a Europa League clash with Qarabag to take in before then, and both men will be available for that fixture.

The Gunners may, however, take the opportunity to experiment before being forced into changes to their Premier League plans.

Emery faces something of a selection poser against the Saints with so many players unavailable.
