Former Liverpool manager Bredan Rodgers has revealed his regrets at losing out on Sanchez to Arsenal in 2014.

Sanchez joined Arsenal in the summer of 2014 and has gone on to become one of the best players in the league.

When it became obvious that Sanchez will only be leaving Barcelona for the Premier League, Liverpool were amongst the clubs trying to sign the Chilean but it was Arsenal who eventually won the race for his signature.

Rodgers who now manages Scottish giants Celtic looks back in regret at missing out Sanchez. In a recent interview, he said,as quoted by Squawka:

“We finished second in the league playing a great level of football. Players were flexible in how they could play and then it was about trying to make that next step.

“And for that we needed to get a replacement. And we deemed Sanchez to be that one.”

I can recall that Sanchez could have easily joined Liverpool that summer. Barcelona were willing to sell him to Liverpool to help smoothing negotiations to sign Suarez but the player rejected the Reds to join us.

This makes me wonder what has changed at Arsenal since that time, when I read reports that the Chilean is no longer willing to sign a new contract with us.

Sanchez’s contract expires at the end of the season and has reportedly told the club he won’t be extending his deal. Arsenal would have loved to keep him but it appears the special reason that made him turn down Liverpool for the Emirates has long died out.
