There has been many names linked with Arsenal over the January transfer window as head coach Mikel Arteta looks to make his first signing as Arsenal boss.
The Spaniard is on the lookout for a new defender in order to help his backline for the second half of the Premier League season, with players such as Dayot Upamecano and John Stones being linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.
However, it is not just defenders who have been mentioned in the same breath as Arsenal over the window, with the Gunners also being linked with a move for some attacking players.
One of them is Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, with Arsenal said to be in talks with the 22-year-old’s club over a possible transfer in January.
However, Arsenal are not the only club said to be interested as they face competition from around Europe in order to secure the signing.
So, could the player be playing his football at the Emirates Stadium by the time that February comes around?
Who is Bruno Guimaraes?
Guimaraes is a 22-year-old midfielder who plays for Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense.
The central midfielder was born in Rio de Janeiro and moved to his current club from Gremio Osasco Audax in May 2017.
Guimaraes made 35 appearances in all competitions during the 2019 season, scoring four goals and providing three assists.
He captained the team on one occasion, wearing the armband in a 1-0 loss against Palmeiras back in June.
He has one cap for Brazil’s U23 team, playing 21 minutes of the team’s 3-2 defeat against Japan back in October.
Portuguese side Benfica are the first to make a move for the 22-year-old.
It was thought that Benfica’s interest had cooled, having recently signed Julian Weigl for €20million, but the Portuguese team are not willing to stop there.
Athletico Paranaense president Mario Celso Petraglia told Portuguese publication O Jogo, as reported by the Metro : “Yes it’s true. Yesterday came the official offer from Benfica to sign Bruno Guimaraes.
“‘Let’s study Benfica’s offer. On Monday we will meet the club board to assess this situation.”
Arsenal interest confirmed
But Paranaense are readying themselves for another offer – from Arsenal.
The Gunners, under new head coach Mikel Arteta, are looking for reinforcements and young Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli has already shown how fruitful a move to the Premier League can be.
