Schalke midfielder Max Meyer is currently an object of interest for Arsenal scouts as Arsene Wenger is considering signing him for free. Sport Bild reported that Arsenal manager sent out scouts to observe the player recently in a match against Leipzig.

According to reports, the 22-year-old is out of contract and has been linked with Arsenal and Barcelona. He actually has been previously linked with Tottenham but Arsenal are currently leading the race for his signature.

A Schalke football official spoke on the player’s contracted situation “Max is happy and at home here but we have to fit an economic agreement that can convince him” he stated.

Schalke have been having a lot of issues lately with contract renewals, players like Sead Kolasinac who ran his contract down also joined Arsenal for free last year, while Leon Goretzka whose contract will be expiring in the summer has agreed to join Bayern Munich.

Max Meyer who is a product of Schalke began as an attacking midfielder but has progressed since then to player deeper positions. He has been compared with the likes of Santi Carzola, which seems to be the reason why Arsenal are targeting him.

It’s reported that Schalke offered to renew his contract for a price of €4.5m but the deal was rejected by the player prompting them to increase the bid to €5.5m, however the star will make his decision known soon.
