Arsenal are set to battle Premier League rivals Chelsea for the signature of Osasuna defender Iker San Vicente.

The young centre back who continues to show maturity on the pitch well beyond his age has expectedly been predicted to go on to achieve big things in his career.

London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have both been credited with very strong interests in San Vicente after the teenager turned down Osasuna’s offer of a new contract.

The Mirror via Metro suggests San Vicente’s decision to reject the new Osasuna deal has put a number of major European teams on red alert ahead of the January transfer window.

The report further states that it is both Chelsea and Arsenal that are seriously chasing the highly-rated centre-back who will be available on a free transfer in the new year.

It is also understood that Arsenal watched San Vicente play last month and Gunners’ officials were very impressed by the defender’s performance.

The youngster is very highly rated in his homeland and already been dubbed by so many as the next Gerard Pique despite being just 16 years of age.

As expected, European heavyweights Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus have also been credited with an interest in the rising star.

Whilst Gooners would seem very pessimistic about our chances of coming out tops in a battle with other top European clubs to sign a player, it is always a different ball game entirely for the prudent Wenger when players are young and full of potential.

Should Wenger be victorious in his quest to land San Vicente, he will initially be expected to bide his time in the youth ranks at the Emirates before making his mark in the first team after acquiring some much needed experience.
