Arsenal manager Unai Emery asked the club to withdraw their contract offer to Chelsea target Aaron Ramsey because he wants to bring in his own players next summer, according to the Daily Star.
The central midfielder who is currently Arsenal’s longest serving player is set to bring an end to his ten year stay at the club when his contract expires at the end of the season after failing to sign a new deal.
The Wales international who is also a target for Man Utd, Liverpool, AC Milan and Juventus joined from Cardiff in 2008 had been expected to sign an extension with the club after agreeing personal terms, but was disappointed as the club withdrew the offer last month.
Reports suggest that Emery had a big influence in the contract withdrawal as he wants to bring in new players of his own. Giving way for Chelsea to swoop in for the star midfielder.
There was also the issue of his wage demands which Emery believes is too much given that the club’s wage budget is at an all time high following some high-profile arrivals at the club in recent times.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are all earning close to 200k a week, while Mesut Ozil is reported to be earning around 350k a week after signing a new deal in January after a similar protracted contract saga.
