Lucas Torreira rejected the chance to join Carlo Ancelotti at Napoli before agreeing a move to Arsenal, according to reports.
The 22-year-old completed a £26.4 million move to the Gunners after arriving in London on Sunday evening to undergo his medical.
Arsenal had wanted to finalise Torreira’s move during the World Cup and were ready to carry out the midfielder’s medical examinations in Russia. But Torreira opted to postpone the medical until Uruguay’s World Cup campaign was over.
But according to Marca, the Gunners were forced to fend off interest from Champions League club Napoli in the race for the Uruguayan.
Ancelotti, who replaced Maurizio Sarri as Napoli manager this summer, wanted to sign Torreira to improve his midfield options. And Napoli had even offered a deal to the 22-year-old.
But Marca claim that Arsenal convinced Torreira to join them instead by offering the midfielder €2m (£1.7m) more in wages per season.
