Anthony Martial has performed a U-turn over his Manchester United future and is now ready to fight for his place under Jose Mourinho, according to reports.
The French forward was widely expected to leave Old Trafford in the summer after his agent confirmed he was unhappy and looking to leave.
Martial’s relationship with Mourinho took a further hit on United’s pre-season tour after he returned home for the birth of his second child.
Former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Mourinho was unhappy at how long it took Martial to return and the 22-year-old was fined two weeks’ wages.
Having being left out of Manchester United’s opening Premier League game of the season, Martial was handed a start against Brighton on Sunday as Alexis Sanchez was ruled out through injury.
But he failed to make an impact against the Seagulls and was hauled off in the second half.
In the wake of the shock 3-2 defeat, Mourinho reportedly issued a fresh plea to Ed Woodward for Martial to be sold before the European transfer window closes at the end of the month.
But, according to The Sun, Martial has been encouraged by United’s refusal to sell him over the summer and is now focused on reviving his career at Old Trafford.
It is claimed Martial has decided not to push for a move before the end of August and is determined to fight for his place in the team, despite competition from the likes of Sanchez, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard.
After Martial’s underwhelming display against Brighton, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes suggested captain Paul Pogba was to blame.
The former England midfielder said on Optus Sport: ‘When you’re 3-1 down, your first thought then is, “we’ve got to score goals, we have to score goals”. Where’s the urgency?’
‘You get a ball in midfield, they’re playing the ball backwards, Paul Pogba is playing the ball out of play, he’s over-hitting passes, hitting passes short, he’s getting caught in possession.
‘You over complicate games. You have to get the ball to the players who can beat a man, who can win games for you.
‘Lukaku can do it. Martial can do it. Martial, in that first half – what was he on for? 55 minutes? An hour? He got one ball down the left-hand side in the first half.
‘And he absolutely flew past the right-back. I can’t remember another time when you get the ball to him.’
Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles at Old Trafford, added: ‘As a midfield player for Man United, your job is to get the ball to your best players who can hurt [the opposition].
‘But the Man United midfield players could never do it. They couldn’t get a ball in to Lukaku, they couldn’t get a ball in to Martial and they couldn’t get a ball in to Rashford when he came on. ‘
There’s lack of leaders in the team, that’s why we thought Paul Pogba might be the ideal candidate to be that leader but he wasn’t there. He had another really poor game. He’s so inconsistent.’
