Contract-rebel Mata set to join Arsenal to re-unite with former boss Unai Emery

Arsenal are set for a shock transfer move for Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata as Unai Emery is reportedly a fan, according to the Express.

The 30-year-old midfielder is no stranger to Unai Emery as they worked together at Valencia when Emery was the manager and Mata was developing into a star midfielder, before he left for Chelsea in 2011.

According to reports, Emery has remained a fan of the attacking playmaker and will be willing to take the opportunity to link up with him again if he becomes available on a free transfer.

Despite efforts from Manchester United, Mata has refused to sign a new contract to extend his stay at the club beyond this season as he hasn’t been guaranteed regular game time by manager Jose Mourinho.

Arsenal are currently in a similar contract situation as Aaron Ramsey is set to leave the club on a free when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Mata could be seen as a direct replacement for the Welshman as he is better suited for the No.10 role Ramsey currently plays at Arsenal.

Interestingly United are also interested in Aaron Ramsey and a possible swap deal for the two midfielders in January similar to the one they had involving Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan at the beginning of this year is not entirely out of the picture.
