David Luiz has insisted he will accept Mikel Arteta’s decision should the Arsenal boss hand his preferred role to new boy Pablo Mari.
Spanish defender Mari joined the club in January on a season long loan from Brazilian side Flamengo, but was not involved in the squad for the 0-0 draw with Burnley earlier this month.
He has been with the team in their training camp in Dubai, however, and Mari could be in line for his Premier League debut against Newcastle this weekend.
The defender operates in the same left-sided centre-back role that Luiz has occupied since making the move to the Emirates from London rivals Chelsea last summer.
And Luiz is aware that he may have to give up his first-choice position to his new team-mate.
“I always want to play,” said Luiz. “I always play in the way the coach wants to play.
“It doesn’t matter the side, it doesn’t matter which position. You guys know I played a lot of positions during my career. I’m always ready for that.
“It’s good when you have a squad with a lot of quality players. We have a game every week, you have to be happy with this.”
Mari arrived at Arsenal have helped Brazilian giants Flamengo win the Brazilian league title and Copa Libertadores.
And Luiz admits he had been keeping a close eye on the defender’s achievements back in his homeland.
“He’s a great player,” added Luiz. “It was a pleasure for me seeing Pablo doing really well in Brazil. I hope he can help us.
“He did amazing under Jorge Jesus, a coach I know very well, he’s my friend and one of the top coaches in the world.
“I speak with Jorge every week, he’s really my friend. He told me to welcome him [Mari] in the best way because he is ready to play.
