Report making the round claims Unai Emery and new head of football Raul Sanllehi are reportedly targeting Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega in the January transfer window.
It will be one of the first deals Sanllehi will look at in his new role as head of football, following Ivan Gazidis’ departure.
Former chief executive Gazidis has opted to join AC Milan, and Sanllehi – previous sporting director at Barcelona – will be tasked with controlling transfers in his absence.
Emery was interested in Banega in the summer but the former Inter Milan star chose to extend his second spell at Sevilla.
Banega’s contract at the Spanish club runs until 2020, but he’s thought to have a buyout clause of €18million.
The Gunners boss worked with Banega at Sevilla and wants the Argentina international, 30, to add competition in midfield.
It is understood Banega would bring a different skill set and increase the competition for places, and Emery is a huge fan of the Argentine’s passing ability and character on the pitch.
Banega spent the 2016-2017 season at Inter, having moved there on a free, but he struggled to perform at a consistent level.
He had one monster game against Atalanta, netting a hat-trick against them, but struggled to nail down a place in the starting XI.
