Chelsea have been handed a major summer transfer blow with reports that Arsenal are close to signing Freiburg defender Caglar Soyuncu, says Freiburg president, according to The Metro.
The Gunners are without a manager after the departure of Arsene Wenger from the club but are set to move ahead with their summer plans as they look to shore up their defence, a position which has been identified as a priority after an abysmal campaign this season.
Chelsea were seriously linked with a move for Soyuncu in January with a move failing to materialise, largely due to delays from the German side and were expected to try again this summer.
Soyuncu was a regular for Freiburg this season, with his impressive performances drawing the attention of the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd, Bayern Munich and the support of Arsenal’s head of recruitment Sven Mislintat.
The board at Arsenal have reportedly not sought the opinion of prospective managers on the defender, but are pushing ahead to sign him nonetheless.
This could only mean that the transfer system at Arsenal has changed and the new manager might not be in charge of transfers, leading to speculations that the next manager will more likely be Mikel Arteta, who is young and may not seek total control of transfers.
Soyuncu’s suitors have been told that Arsenal have won the race, and The Telegraph reports that the North London side have agreed a £35 million (€43.5m) deal, but will wait till they appoint a new manager before completing the deal.
