Diego Costa is hoping to join Atletico Madrid this week, according to reports in Spain.

the Spanish side resumed talks with Chelsea earlier this week over the transfer of the striker and it is believed both clubs are now closing in on an agreement.

The two clubs spent the whole summer negotiating over Costa but couldn’t agree a fee, perhaps because of how the striker handled the situation.

The striker’s reluctance to return to London caused Chelsea to take a hard stance during negotiations, which meant a deal couldn’t be reached before the transfer window closed.

However, Marca are claiming both clubs are closing in on an off window agreement which will see Costa move to Madrid for £53m.

The Spaniard’s are willing to pay £40m in transfer fees, £9m in add-ons and an extra £4m for Costa’s early release.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are desperate to resolve the Costa saga before both clubs meet in the Champions League in a fortnight.

Costa who is due in Spain on Tuesday will begin training in a private facility while both clubs thrash out a deal.

He will be desperate to get his future sorted as soon as possible because his career could be affected if he finds himself without a club for a long time.
