Gunners manager Unai Emery made contact with West Ham to discuss a possible deal for Issa Diop, who has also been on Man United’s radar. The Spanish coach has been on the lookout for a new defender this transfer window, with Laurent Koscielny currently pushing for a move away from the London club.
Red Devils have also been targeting a new centre-back, and a potential £45m move for the Hammers talisman Issa was mooted back in June. Unai has also explored the possibility of signing Diop, but West Ham made it clear that they would just listen to offers within the region of £65m.
PL clubs have cooled their interest in recent months, however, with only seven days left until the transfer window slams shut again until after Christmas. The London club failed to qualify for the Champions League last season after finishing fifth in the Premier League, but Arsenal have still been able to make big moves in this summer.
Emery probably baulked at the 22-year-old centre-back’s price tag given Gunners limited transfer budget, and unless any more departures are confirmed in the coming days, Arsenal are unlikely to re-ignite their interest.
Unai has brought in Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid, in addition to Brazilian starlet Gabriel Martinelli, Lille forward Nicolas Pepe and French defender William Saliba.
Arsenal shipped a whopping 51 Premier League goals last term, which is why strengthening the back-line was a priority for the Spanish manager, but aside from Saliba, who will come back to Saint Ettiene on loan until next year, no recruits have been added at the back.
