Arsenal’s Theo Walcott has been identified as a major transfer target by his former club Southampton according to The Express.

The Saints agreed the sale of their defender Virgil van Dijk for a world record fee (for a defender) few days ago, and have begun to plan their rebuilding process with the funds.

Theo Walcott has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal and is said to be desperate to leave the Emirates Stadium in January in search of first team football to boost his dimming hopes of a place in England’s World Cup squad next year.

The Express say Walcott is the number one target on Manuel Pellegrino’s wish list as he looks to improve his squad for the second half of the season.

However, The Sun reports that Southampton were initially reluctant to match the £110,000 per week that their former academy product earns at Arsenal, but the sale of van Dijk has now put them in a position to, and they are now happy to either get him on loan or in a permanent move.

Theo Walcott started his career at the Hampshire club, coming through their academy and becoming their youngest debutant at the age of 16 years, 143 days, a record he still holds till date.

He scored 4 goals in 21 appearances before joining Arsenal in 2006, and going on to score over a hundred goals for the Gunners.

Walcott seems to have served his purpose at Arsenal and the time is right to let him go, what do you think? Drop your comments below.
