Graeme Souness believes Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain snubbed a move to Chelsea because of Antonio Conte.

Chamberlain was the subject of interest from Chelsea in the just concluded transfer window but the 24 year old turned down a move to Chelsea after a £40m fee had been reached between both clubs.

He subsequently secured a move to Liverpool, where he signed a five year deal on deadline day.

And Souness says Chamberlain rejected Chelsea because he didn’t want to play as a wingback.

“Today, £30-40m is buying you a good player, but not a top man,” Souness wrote in The Sunday Times, as quoted by the Daily Star.

“The initial £35m that Liverpool have paid for Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain is a very high figure for a player coming to the end of his contract at Arsenal.

“Oxlade-Chamberlain chose Liverpool rather than Chelsea because he did not want to be a wing-back.

“He sees himself dropping the shoulder and going past people in the central midfield area. I don’t see him as a wing-back either. He is the wrong shape for it.”

At Chelsea, there wouldn’t have been a place for Chamberlain in midfield as he would have been competing with Cesc Fabregas, Tiemoue Bakayoko and N’Golo Kante. So there was no way the club would have signed him as a centre midfielder.

Interestingly, his attributes are not close to any of Chelsea’s centre midfielders, meaning he wouldn’t have been a good fit in Conte’s midfield had the club promised him what he wanted.
