Arsene Wenger has refused to respond to rumors linking Raheem Sterling with a move to the Emirates.
Arsenal faces Premier League leader Manchester City last weekend and there was no way Wenger could avoid being asked questions about Sterling.
The Gunners were reported to be interested in Sterling as a make-weight in a swap deal that would have involved Sanchez but the move fell through as City weren’t willing to lose the forwards.
Arsenal eventually held firm over City’s interest to sign Sanchez, even though the player was keen to make the switch to the Etihad in the last summer transfer window.
When asked about Sanchez’s mental preparation to face a team he could have joined few months ago, Wenger insists he isn’t worried about the Chilean’s focus but then the manager refused to confirm if it was true Arsenal tried to sign Sterling.
Wenger said: “I don’t want to open any speculations on that before a game like that.
“I believe that the transfer window is closed at the moment so that is not really a subject that is very important.”
Sterling has been in fine form for City this season while Sanchez hasn’t really been at his best. The former has found the net seven times in the league this season while Sanchez has done that just once.
No one knows how things would have turned out had we swapped both players but I am happy we didn’t. Keeping Sanchez alone has shown we won’t just let players decide when to leave here at their own will.
