Kieran Tierney leads Premier League defenders in chance creation since December 1st, as one of the key beneficiaries of Arsenal’s recent tactical changes.

Kieran Tierney was one of the stars of the show against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

No one created more chances than the left-back’s four for Arsenal on the night, with one of those leading to Alexandre Lacazette’s second goal. Tierney also curled in a fantastic individual effort himself to open the scoring in the first place.

But it wasn’t just a one-off performance from the 23-year-old. Across the entire league, no defender has made more chances than Tierney’s 15 since the start of December. That doesn’t even include the penalty he won against Chelsea.

Tierney has benefitted significantly from the recent shift back to a four in defence. Playing as a full-back again, rather than a left-centre-back, he’s free to get forward and combine with Gabriel Martinelli and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang regularly.

The same is true for Hector Bellerin on the other side, who has created seven chances in that same time period despite playing significantly less. That’s one chance every 55 minutes compared to one every 42 for Tierney, so fairly similar numbers.

The extra chance creation from the defenders is making a real difference to Arsenal’s performances, and let’s hope they can keep it up.
