Chelsea defender David Luiz believes that Maurizio Sarri’s philosophy on and off the pitch has had a positive impact at Chelsea this season.

Sarri lost his first competitive game in charge of the club against Manchester City in the Community Shield but has since presided over four successive wins in the Premier League.

Luiz has been a central figure for Chelsea in the opening weeks of the campaign, playing in all four of their league games and forming a solid partnership with Antonio Rudiger in defence.

The Brazilian fell out of favour under Antonio Conte last season and was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer before re-establishing himself under Sarri.

Clearly, Sarri has made a big impression on Luiz with the defender praising him for his outlook on life as well as his tactical philosophy and rigorous match preparation.

‘First of all he’s a great person, great as a human. I think his philosophy to live life is already great because he wants to enjoy every day, he wants to be happy and he wanted to take this opportunity to start one more chapter in his life,’ Luiz said.

‘I think that is one of the most important things in life: when you love to do something, when you’re happy. ‘So, I believe in this philosophy, and then after that he is a great coach. He wants to play with the ball, he wants to play with intensity, to work on the details and to give us all the information he can about the next game and the opponent.

‘Every week he tries to make the best plan possible for the exact game and this is great because he is working in the best way for the team, for the collective.’

Despite being in the job for less than two months, Sarri has made some big adjustments to Chelsea’s shape as well as changes to the personnel at his disposal.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho all joined in the summer and the latter has been particularly influential in Chelsea’s shift to a possession-based style of play.

Another big change that Sarri has made has been to ditch Conte’s three-man defence and implement a 4-3-3 formation with Luiz slotting into one of the central defensive roles.

Luiz enjoyed an exceptional season upon his return to Chelsea from PSG in 2016, earning a place in the PFA Team of the Year as the team won the Premier League title in Conte’s first season.

Injury problems allied to him falling out with Conte restricted Luiz to just ten league appearances last season but he looks set to be a central figure in the new regime.
