Arsenal and Chelsea are set to lose out on German midfielder Leon Gortezka with Liverpool set to sign him on a free transfer next summer, according to The Sun.
Goal.com had earlier reported that Liverpool are one of five clubs keen on signing the midfielder from Schalke, adding that they had an advantage over other parties with his former teammate Joel Matip at the club.
However, The Sun believes they have now won the race to sign the 22 year old on a free transfer, just days after their record signing of defender Virgil van Dijk.
Leon Goretzka is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in the Bundesliga, but serious injuries have slowed his progress, however he showed his qualities to the world at the Confederations Cup, and has attracted interests since then.
Arsenal had previously been linked with Goretzka, with the Mirror claiming they were set to sign a pre-contract agreement with the midfielder in January, but Liverpool have swooped in and stolen a march on their rivals.
If the reports are to be true, it wouldn’t be much of a loss to Arsenal, as we already have Aaron Ramsey who is a similar player, though it would have been nice to get a player of such quality on a free, even if it means having to figure out a way to fit him and Ramsey into the same line-up.
