Arsenal are set to battle Spanish heavyweights Barcelona in the race to sign FC Porto midfielder Danilo Pereira.
The versatile midfielder who has of late been very impressive for club and country has long caught the eye of Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, the player performances have also not gone unnoticed by Barcelona, who are now also reported to be monitoring the 26-year-old.
With the likely departures of Mesut Ozil, Santi Carzola and Jack Wilshere at the end of the current campaign, Wenger who is understood to be keen on reinvigorating his midfield next year has targeted Pereira as part of his plans.
Recent reports are however now indicating that the Gunners may have to see off interest from the La Liga giants to sign the player.
According to Mundo Deportivo via Daily Cannon, Barcelona had scouts at Portugal’s 2-0 win over Andorra to watch the defensive midfielder in action. The midfielder has earned 23 caps for Portugal since making the step-up to Porto from Maritimo two years ago.
Wenger’s interest in the player comes with no surprise. The player typically plays as a holding midfielder but is also adept at playing in central defense, another area of the squad the Gunners should be looking at strengthening in January.
Porto who are typically tough negotiators are expected to demand a huge fee for the Portuguese international with so many big clubs interested in him.
