Marc Overmars has turned down the advances of Arsenal to sign a new deal as director of football at Ajax.
Arsenal are on the hunt for a new technical director following the departure of Sven Mislintat at the beginning of February.
The German, who arrived with a glowing reputation from Borussia Dortmund, quit after just 14 months.
Former Arsenal winger Overmars, 45, and Monchi, 50, were on the club’s initial shortlist of names for the position at the Emirates – but the Gunners will now have to look elsewhere for the role.
Monchi rejoined Sevilla to become the club’s sporting director at the weekend, making Overmars the favourite for the role in the north London.
However, the Dutchman has become the latest figure to reject Arsenal. The ex-Gunner has agreed to extend his contract with Ajax until June 2024.
‘There are still plenty of challenges at Ajax and I’m having a good time here,’ Overmars said in a statement on Monday afternoon.
‘We are taking steps with both the youth academy and the first team.
‘From a sporting point of view, we still want to show a lot. What is also important to me is that it is nice to work with the people around me. I get pleasure and satisfaction from that.’
Chairman of Ajax’s supervisory board Leen Meijaard added: ‘Marc Overmars told us that we have a strong feeling that we are not yet finished at Ajax.
‘He knows that we are very satisfied with his performance. He has made an enormous contribution to the developments that Ajax has made in the years in which he has been a member of the management board and we as the supervisory board are confident that the club can take further steps with him in the years to come.
‘For the continuity of Ajax’s business it is also important that we clarify key positions such as this for the future.
‘In short: we are happy that Marc Overmars wants to commit to Ajax for a longer period.’
Monchi confirmed that Arsenal had been in touch over him potential becoming their new technical director. ‘
‘I appreciate the interest of Arsenal, perhaps the one that has shown the most interest, and of other clubs who have made contact,’ Monchi said at his Sevilla unveiling on Monday.
‘I have evaluated the proposals I had and I have chosen Sevilla.
‘It was the one that brought things together and had the conditions for me.’
