Former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires has claimed that Mesut Ozil is currently unhappy at Emirates due to the Gunners’ transfer policy.
The ex-Gunner recently revealed that the German international who is into the last year of his contract is angry at Wenger’s reluctance to financially compete with his rivals in order to assemble a more quality squad capable of challenging at the very top.
“Ozil is a warrior who wants to win something, and currently he makes the impression that he’s annoyed Arsenal have not assembled a squad which can win something,” said Pires as reported via Tribal Football
“They only spent money on Alexandre Lacazette. That’s not enough to compete for the top spots.”
With no news to report regarding any progress on an extension to his contract with just months left to run, the 28-year-old who is free to negotiate with foreign clubs from the turn of the year has been linked with a host of top European clubs.
It is however understood that unlike the situation of Alexis Sanchez who is determined to quit the Gunners next summer, staying at the Emirates is a realistic option for Ozil and Wenger is believed to be confident a deal to extend the midfielder’s contract beyond the season can still be agreed with negotiations understood to be ongoing.
The World Cup winner who recently recovered from a knee inflammation made his comeback to action in the Gunners defeat to Watford last weekend. He is expected to feature again when we take on Everton on Sunday.
