Jermain Defoe Signs for Toronto FC

Jermain Defoe has agreed to a move to Major League Soccer club Toronto FC. The Spurs winger will join his new club in March when the league begins. Defoe has made a total of 11 appearances so far has scored nine times for the Spurs. One of the reasons for his move to the MLS is therefore regular play time.

Toronto FC and Tottenham have agreed on a $9 million fee for Defoe. The winger will be paid a weekly wage of $135,000 and is reported to have signed a four-year contract with his new club.

Tim+sherwoodSpurs manager, Tim Sherwood believes that Defoe will be a vital back-up option for the team until March. Speaking on the transfer, Sherwood said, ‘This is a great opportunity for Jermain Defoe and he feels it is one that he wishes to pursue.’

Jermain Defoe scored a total of 142 goals in nine years he has played with Spurs. He has a record of being the fifth all-time leading scorer of the club.

The England International has spoken with great admiration for Spurs and promised to perform at his best until he is with the club. Speaking about his decision to move, he said, ‘Everybody knows how much this club means to me. I will play my heart out for the team and the fans until my last kick for the club.’

“I have had a fantastic time here and the fans have always been amazing to me,” the striker continued. “I am grateful for the opportunity for myself and my family to experience living overseas and for me to play in MLS with a contract that will take me to the age of 35. I have no doubt I shall be coming back as a fan supporting the team in the years to come too.”
