Manchester United could sack Jose Mourinho if they fail to beat Fulham this weekend, according to pundit Paul Merson.
“I see a return to winning ways for Manchester United against Fulham at Old Trafford,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“However, if they do not win this game Jose Mourinho will do well to keep his job come Monday.
“If they can’t beat Fulham at home where are they going?
“At the moment we are talking about it being a feat if they get into the top four so this is a must-win game.
“If they don’t win the game I would be shocked if Mourinho was there on Monday.”
Jose Mourinho has been installed as 7/4 (2.75) favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post following Mark Hughes’ dismissal from Southampton on Monday.
Hughes was swiftly replaced by Ralph Hassenhuttl at St. Mary’s Stadium, meaning the Manchester United boss is the shortest price in William Hill’s Sack Race market.
A top-four place will prove tricky to get, with United already eight points off Chelsea after 15 games.
Not qualifying for the Champions League could cost Mourinho his job.
And according to The Sun it would also mean his payoff from the club is vastly reduced.
They report there is a clause in the ex-Chelsea and Inter Milan manager’s deal that means his compensation package will be cheaper if they don’t secure a place in Europe’s elite competition for next season.
